Rings and Sparkles

A few months back, I saw a post on ring shots, and I decided I wanted to try something similar to some of the shots. I wasn’t a big fan of the sparklers or fried chicken, but the glittery stuff looked kind of cool. Thus inspired, I took a couple of rings, a mirror, a flashlight, and some sparkly stuff I had around the house, then got out the macro and started experimenting. Obviously, my rose ring is a cheap adjustable, but I thought it would be fun just for the experiment.

Valentine Flowers

A bit of a late Happy Valentine’s Day to all of you. This is the time of year I really start wanting it to be Spring. It is also the time of year you can easily purchase a floral bouquet. Last week, I purchased a single rose and some “pompoms” at a local supermarket. I’m pretty sure “pompom” is just florist for big showy mum. Anyway, I set up the light and some backgrounds and pulled out the macro lens.

This was my pinkish rose. Lovely while she lasted.

Twirly in the center and a beautiful hue.

I stuck one of my old rings in it in honor of Valentine’s Day. There is nothing like a macro lens to show you how cheep your costume jewelry is. I spent some time retouching this one, and I’m about to swear I will never shoot it again. Nonetheless, it does look kind of romantic.

A little less seasonal, here is the “pompom”. This was more fun with the macro lens than the rose. I loved the long, spiky petals in the center.

Kind of off topic, but I wanted to say I know this can be a tough day for single people. Personally, I think our culture is a little overboard when it comes to celebrating romantic love. There are other kinds of love and relationships in most people’s lives that are worth remembering and celebrating on this day. So if you can this weekend, take a few minutes to call or message a friend or relative and let them know you love them. And remember, the chocolate goes on sale tomorrow.

Miscellaneous Rings

Let me be honest, I don’t wear rings. Not only do they get in the way, but I sprained my right ring finger doing something stupid when I was 9, and it has been a little out of whack ever since then. Rings go on, but they don’t come off too easily. The only reason I’ve kept them is so I can photograph them.

This turquoise ring was my aunt’s untill she was no longer able to wear it. (Knuckles keep growing through the years.) It’s a bit chunky and could probably use some more cleaning, but I like the look. The turquoise and the large leaf design give it a nice earthy sort of character very different from most of my other jewelry.

I found this opal ring in thrift store when I was in junior high. The stones sparkle in the light, and the colors are like sunset. It’s odd, but I love it.

This purple cubic zirconia was a gift from my mother and was a fine complement to my wardrobe back in my ring wearing days. It’s more like most of my jewelry. Small, nice-looking, and costume. I’ve never cared for gaudy and I don’t want the liability of wearing “the real thing”, not to mention the price.

Sometimes, I still think about wearing the turquoise or the opal. Incase you’re wondering, the opal is the only one to make it on my finger while I was shooting for this post. My love of things I find aesthetically pleasing dies hard.

Love

Since Valentine’s day is next week, I thought I’d use this post to show some of my ideas and feelings about love. I’ll openly admit I don’t know much of anything about romantic love, so most of my thoughts are innocent and simple.

Purity, simplicity, and innocence; a love of family and friends.

Blushing and awkward; the first time someone likes you, and you don't know how to feel.

Deep, sincere, and lasting; love for what really matters.

Next: Monotone

Being a bit tired of jewelry, I’ve decided to do some more abstract black and white next week. This may or may not include snow shots. It will be digital, and I’ll probably tint a lot of them. Hold on to your hat, next week’s gonna be different.
